It is important to know your tuition fee status as it determines your annual tuition fee and what financial support you may be entitled to.
Your fee status could be one of the following:
Your fee status is usually determined by:
- your immigration status
- your residency in the country where you normally live (where you are 'ordinarily resident') before starting your course.
We will use the guidance provided by UKCISA in determining your fee status.
Home
You are likely to have a 'home' (previously known as 'UK') fee status if you meet all of the following criteria:
- you have 'settled' status in the UK (this means there are no immigration restrictions on your stay)
- you have lived in the UK as your ordinary place of residence for three years before you start your course
- you will be ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of your course (this is 1 September for courses starting in September)
- your reason for being in the UK is not to attend full-time education.
If you are an EU, EEA or Swiss national, or if you live in those territories, you are likely to be assigned an 'overseas' fee status. However, you may qualify for 'home' fee status if any of the following criteria apply:
EU, EEA and Swiss nationals not living in the UK
From 1 August 2021, the Welsh Government no longer provide support to EU, EEA and Swiss nationals who are not living in the UK, including their family members, who want to study in Wales. This is as a result of the UK’s exit from the European Union.
Island
You are likely to have an 'island' fee status if you have been ordinarily resident in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man before starting your course.
You may therefore be eligible to apply for funding support from the governments of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man to help with university costs.
Overseas
You are likely to have an 'overseas' fee status if you are not resident in the UK and do not meet any of the criteria described under 'home'.
If you are an asylum seeker or the child of an asylum seeker, for some programmes you may be eligible for a tuition fee waiver. If so, your tuition fees will be reduced from the ‘overseas’ fee to the 'home' fee charged for your course. Please be aware that your fee status will remain as an 'overseas' student.
Deciding your fee status
We are not able to make a decision on your fee status before you have submitted an application.
Most applicants will have their fee status confirmed at the point of offer. If we need further information from you when we receive your application, we’ll ask you to complete a fee status questionnaire.
