Biography

I obtained my BSc and DPhil at Sussex University, before spending three years as a post-doctoral fellow at McMaster University in Canada, and a further two years as Wissenshaftlicher Mitarbeiter at Hamburg University. After a period as lecturer at UCNW Bangor, I moved to Cardiff University in 1988.

Research interests

Present interests centre on electronic properties of single protein molecules, performed in close collaboration with JE Macdonald (in the School) and DD Jones (School of Bioscience). Study of electronic conduction of single molecules has become an important area due to potential applications as well interest in the intrinsic processes involved. We employ AFM (atomic force microscopy) and STM (scanning tunnelling microscopy) to explore conduction of different molecular types.

Supervising one PhD student on proteins studied using electrostatic force microscopy and related techniques.
