Profile
Dr Yue Tina Xu is a Senior Lecturer in International Business and Management at Cardiff Business School (CARBS). Her research explores and examines strategies, capabilities, and impact of firms in the process of global integration and competition. Based on emerging market multinational enterprises (EM-MNEs) going global phenomenon, she asks questions such as to what extent institutions (home and/or abroad) may influence foreign entry strategies, competitive advantages, and performance. She is in the Editorial Review Board of Management Organization Review. She is also a Regent Board Member of the Chinese Economic Association (UK).
Yue completed her PhD in Cranfield School of Management. Sponsored by the highly competitive Cranfield Scholarship, Yue did a pioneering study exploring the impact of regulation on the strategy of foreign banks entering the Chinese market. During her PhD study, she engaged in consultancy for the EU-China Financial Service Co-operation Project and a sponsored internship in the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC).
Yue joined CARBS on November 1, 2016 and before that she was a concurrent Visiting Scholar of Wolfson College at the University of Cambridge and a Lecturer of International Business at the Hull University Business School in the UK. Before embarking on an academic career, she was a Project Manager at AVIC International Beijing Company Limited (AVIC INTL Beijing).

Teaching commitment
Yue has taught UG, MSc, MBA, EMBA, and PhD students covering various modules in the field International Business, Strategy, and Management. She had taught EMBA courses in Singapore and Hong Kong for several years.
She takes the role as a personal tutor and academic supervisor regularly. More than half of her postgraduate supervisees achieved distinction results every year.
Currently, she is the module leader of BST710 (Understanding Organizations and Business Environment) of the MSc Business Management.
Committee commitment
From 2020 to present, Yue has been the member of the School Research Ethics Committee (SREC) representing the Section to assess research ethics applications.
From 2020 to present, Yue is the co-chair/founder for the EMNC Focused Interest Group with Prof. Jean Jenkins and Dr Heike Doering. The forum aims to engage and provide scholarly support to doctoral candidates doing research on emerging economies across different Schools of the Cardiff University.
From 2019 to present, Yue is co-director of the Centre for China Business Research of Cardiff University. The Centre regularly undertakes research seminars and workshops as well as the Tri-University Annual Conference.
From 2018-2000, Yue was the Unfair Practice Coordinator of the Misconduct Committee representing the Section to investigate students’ unfair practice cases.
Research Interests
Yue’s publications appear in leading academic journals such as Tourism Management, International Business Review, Management and Organization Review. Her multidisciplinary research currently concentrates on the following themes.
To what extent institutions affect investment decisions and strategic actions; Recent publications include: “The effect of European intellectual property institutions on Chinese outward foreign direct investment” (2019), and “Institutional changes in the oil industry: China vs. Russia.” (2021).
How innovation resources and capabilities sustain competitive advantages; Recent publications include: “Independent or interdependent innovation: the case of Huawei” (2020), and “Unpacking the impact of OFDI speed and rhythm on innovation performance: Evidence from Chinese firms.” (2022).
What are the processes of legitimacy defeat taking geo-politics and varieties of capitalism into account; Recent publications include: “The legitimacy defeat of Huawei in the media: Cause, context, and process” (2022).
How to consider digital impact on emerging markets, entrepreneurs, and internationalization processes; Some recent publications include: “Opportunities in digital entrepreneurship” (2023).
Research funding successes
Scholarship from China Scholar Council (CSC) (2019-2023): This prestigious scholarship makes Anlan Zhang one of only two recipients of fully funded Research Excellence Scholarships at CARBS in 2019. Part of the assessment was based on a competitive research proposal that Anlan developed from his MBA dissertation under the supervision of Dr Yue Tina Xu.
National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC) (2017.01-2020.12): Co-Researcher, with a total grant of £59,400 working on the topic: A study of organisational legitimacy, technological resources, and localisation of innovation of emerging multinational enterprises.
Research Grant from the Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) (2012.09 – 2014.03): Co-Researcher, with a total grant of £12,000 working on the topic: Networking, social capital, and SME internationalisation in a peripheral regional economy: Exploring the potential.
