Overview
I am a Professor of Medical and Dental Education at Cardiff University, School of Social Sciences and, since 2009, Director of the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education. The purpose of the Unit and my main activity is to conduct multidisciplinary research and evaluation of the education and training of healthcare professionals. I have accumulated over 100 peer-reviewed publications and until recently, was Associate Editor of the European Journal of Dental Education. The other main aspects of my role include grant capture and doctoral supervision. I am currently the Direct or Research for the School of Social Sciences.
Biography
After gaining a PhD in 1988, I taught for a year before taking up a research post at the School of Education, University of Birmingham in 1990. I was promoted to Reader in Medical and Dental Education in 2005 and served as co-Director of Research for three years from October 2005. I took up my current post as Professor and Director of the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education (CUREMeDE) in 2009.

My primary contribution to teaching takes the form of MPhil/PhD/PD supervision.
I am also a module lead on the iBSc in Medical Education.
With a focus on the education and development of health professionals, research interests include

- knowledge transfer and exchange
Supervision
I welcome doctoral applications from those interested in working on multi-disciplinary topics related to my broad research activity in the education of healthcare professionals.
My particular interest is on the impact of postgraduate and continuing education and training on the work of healthcare practitioners (such as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, optometrists). A related area of research interest is knowledge transfer and mobilisation in healthcare settings.
I currently supervise 14 students (including those studying full-time and part-time, for PhD and professional doctorates)
