Dr Michael Packianather
Reader
Overview
Dr. Michael S Packianather received his BSc(Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and MSc and PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Wales Cardiff in 1991, 1993 and 1997 respectively. From February 1997 to 2001 he worked as a Research Associate at Cardiff School of Engineering before becoming a lecturer. He was promoted to the position of Senior Lecturer in 2011. He is serving as the PGR Tutor for Mechanical, Medical and Manufacturing Engineering. His research interests include: - Industry 4.0, Data Mining and Machine Learning, Deep Neural Networks and AI, Robotics and Human-Robot Collaboration, and Intelligent Optimisation.
The research projects he worked on from 2014-2019 includes the KTP project with Brick Fabrication in Pontypool involving modelling and optimising their manufacturing process using Discrete Event Simulation method and Data Mining for capacity building and forward planning. He also worked on developing a patient flow model for the Emergency Department in the Teaching Hospital in Cardiff for dealing with delays and surges by applying tools and techniques associated with Manufacturing Processes. Currently, he is involved in the H2020 project in the area of smart manufacturing.
Further, in the past five years he has successfully collaborated with Vietnamese Universities and Indian Universities in the area of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies funded by the British Council’s Newton Fund, Newton Bhabha Fund, and Higher Education Partnership Programme.
He is a Full Member of the EPSRC College, an Expert Reviewer for European Commission FET PROACT Research Programme, and an Expert Reviewer for SMART4.0 Programme. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Systems Engineering Journal and IMechE Proceedings Part I.
He was an invited speaker at the Digital Festival in Cardiff in 2018, Smart Home Expo in Birmingham in 2019, and ACMA Technology Summit & Expo in Pune, India in 2019.
In 2015 he started a new MSc Programme called Manufacturing Engineering, Innovation and Management, a joint venture between the School of Engineering and the Business School.
