Professor Richard Marsh
Professor
Overview
Richard Marsh is a Professor specialising in energy systems. His teaching expertise covers thermodynamics, energy studies and energy management at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. His main research interests are:
Combustion Biomass to energy systems
Fuel injection Gas turbine engineering ( http://www.cu-gtrc.co.uk )
Chemical and process engineering
Waste Management
Richard Graduated from Warwick University in 1999 with a BEng in mechanical engineering and a MRes in advanced engineering, specialising in optical diagnostics for combustion systems. In 1999 he took a position as an engineer with DERA (later privatised to QinetiQ). Whilst at QinetiQ, Richard worked in the combustion and emissions group, developing gas turbine technologies for military and civil applications. Most of this work involved high-pressure combustion testing at the Pyestock facility, in areas such as nonsteady combustion behaviour and particulate matter ejection. In 2002 Richard joined Cardiff University as a PhD student in the School of Engineering. Post PhD he worked as a research associate and project manager on a range of energy related projects including gasification and combustion of biomass and waste. During this time he undertook a number of collaborative projects with companies such as RWE, Castle Cement and Progressive Energy. Richard took a lectureship in the School of Engineering in 2008 and became involved with the School’s Gas Turbine Research Centre (GTRC). To date he has worked on and led a variety of research projects and presented at major international conferences, including ASME, ICLASS and ICSW. He currently works collaboratively with companies including Rolls-Royce, eon, TATA, EU EASA, Stork B V and others.
Funding sources for his research include TSB, EPSRC, EU FP7, ERDF, Welsh Government and industry. Richard’s current research projects include methane oxycombustion for the development of capture ready power plants, work funded via the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre. His portfolio also includes research into the nature of particulate matter from aircraft; research into power plant flexibility and use of alternative fuels; atomisation and spray formation in heavy fuels; and fundamental studies of swirl combustion processes with variable fuel compositions. Richard is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Physics and is a Director of the British Flame (the UK arm of the International Flame Research Foundation). He is a technical officer for the GTRC.
