Nicholas Claydon

Biography

I am a graduate of the University of Wales College of Medicine (Cardiff, 1986) and am registered to the General Dental Council (GDC No 61547). I attained my MScD in Periodontal research at the University of Wales College of Medicine and my PhD from the University of Bristol, entitled Development and Application of Methods to Study Plaque Control by Dental Health Products. I was accredited as a specialist in Periodontics by the General Dental Council in 2000. I am Member and examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons (England) and was awarded my Fellowship ad eundem in 2020. I am Council member of the British Society of Periodontology and in 2015, I was recognised with Faculty membership. I am Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and I attend the Specialist Advisory Committee for Restorative Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I am examiner at the Royal College at membership and Speciality level. I work within the Advanced Therapies Group and am currently Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Dental School where I teach on the MSc in Implantology and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol.

Teaching

I am Senior Lecturer and lecture Nationally and Internationally on my research and clinical practice at undergraduate, postgraduate and specialist level.

I contribute to the Cardiff Dental School Masters degree in Dental Implantology delivering formal teaching programs for periodontology, bone augmentation and peri-implantitis, as well practical teaching of surgical and restorative skills related to dental implants

I have supervised and co supervised more than 50 postgraduate MSc Implantology students to completion and am currently engaged with 5 postgraduate students

I have co supervised one PhD to completion and am currently co supervising 3 PhD students

I am an accredited trainer for Speciality Trainees in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons (England)

I attend the Royal College of Surgeons (England) where I am:
- Member of the Specialist Advisory Committee in Restorative dentistry
- Exminer for MFDS exam
- Examiner for Specialist exam MPerio
- Ambassador for the Royal College

My research interests include developing research methodologies, periodontal conditions, bone augmentation and peri-implant lesions, the scientific evaluation of oral health care products, tooth wear, dentine hypersensitivity and tooth whitening. I have conducted more than 100 clinical research studies and have published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals in these fields of interest. I am a founding Associate Editor for the Frontiers in Oral Surgery journal and am a reviewer for several high impact dental journals.
