Context-Aware Security for Cyber-Physical Edge Resources For Industrial Control Systems
Problem: Most common Industrial Control Systems (ICS) attack detection approaches are based on Network Traffic Analysis (NTA). NTA is the process of intercepting, recording and analysing network traffic communication patterns in order to detect and respond to security threats. However, more sophisticated cyber-attacks may require novel detection solutions.
Proposed Solution: To detect this kind of attack more efficiently, we propose Context-Aware Security for Cyber-Physical Edge Resources for Industrial Control Systems (CASPER). CASPER aims to combine traditional NTA with novel physical behavioural data analysis to better detect attacks.
Example Case of Scenario: If an attacker intends to overheat a system, they could alter the fan behaviour (e.g., speed). At the same time, the attacker may also maliciously control the relevant temperature sensors to prevent the reporting of increased temperatures back to the control system, which leads to overheating.
