Cunqiang Shi is a PhD researcher who is interested in disability studies, especailly the employment issues of disabled people in China. He has completed his MSc. human Resource Managment and MSc. Social Science Research Method at Cardiff Business School. As a disabled person himself, he has gained first hand empircal experience in the Chinese and UK context.

Disability Rights Activism:
Cunqiang Shi is a board member of Disability Wales, a leading disability rights advocacy organisation in Wales, UK. Key responsibilities as a board member require Cunqiang to provide evidence based research information to the organisation to better deliver and excute strategic goals for DW as a policy oriented DPO.
Organisational Consultancy
Cunqiang Shi has been acting as an external advisor to ValueInvesting.io., a start-up which provides automated Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) and WACC for value investors. The platform has been built upon the key vision of increasing financial literacy, increasing accessibilities of financial information for everyone. The platform has a range of quantitative and qualitative data for most publicly listed companies around the globe, many populainancial valuation models and other resources like screener, watchlist, etc...
AlphaResearch has become our recent partner which provides a platform for users to search SEC filings such as form 10 k, 10q, form 8k, 13f filings and form 4 efficiently using machine learning and AI.

Cunqiang welcomes all enquries and suggestions regarding his current PhD project which focuses on the social-ecnomic transition in China and its impact on disabled people's work and employment.
Research
Research interests
Cunqiang's current research project investigates the lived experience of disabled people in the Chinese labour market, contrasting it with the theortical framworks that were emereged in the context of UK. A social model of disability appraoch is adopted for this research as it better reflects the social reality of disablement. Cunqiang aims to 'reintroduce' the historical materalist theoretical viewpoint by bringing the empircal evidence collected in China which is arguablly a nation with hybrid mode of productions.
Cunqiang's fieldwork covers 18 different regions in various parts of China. He has interviewed 48 disabled people who shared their lived expereince in employment. The findings of the resarch has been presented at various academic conferences:

Thesis
Being left behind? An investigation of the impact of economic and social change on disabled people's employment in regions within China
My research topic is about disabled people’s employment experience in the territories of China. I found it is fascinating to see how disabled people’s employment are different in terms of their residence areas. For example, a disabled person who lives in a urban city in the east coast may experience significantly differently from a disabled person who lives in a rural cottage in the west mountains. This social-economic and potentially ideological difference makes China an interesting country to be investigated in terms of disability issues, and other social-political topics.
My research will be drawn on the works done by disability scholars in the past three decades, namely the medical/individual model of disability, social model of disability, critical disability studies, etc. I will also explore the ancient and current philosophical underpin of Chinese people and look into how Chinese citizens regard disability.
