We offer opportunities for students to study undergraduate modules completely or partly through the medium of Welsh.

For undergraduates

Welsh language options are available for a number of core and option modules, though the provision in the latter depends on demand and availability of staff.

For core modules, Welsh language seminar groups are available, while the lectures will be in English. Our Welsh medium core provision typically includes:

• HS1107 History in Practice (35% in Welsh)
• HS1701 Approaches to History (35% in Welsh)
• HS1702 Exploring Historical Debate (Archwilio Dadl Hanesyddol) (100% in Welsh)
• HS1801 Final Year Dissertation (Traethawd Estynedig) (100% in Welsh)

In your first undergraduate year

You can choose modules in which Welsh medium seminars are available as part of the provision. We typically offer Welsh medium seminars for the following modules:

• HS1109 Inventing a Nation: Politics, Culture and Heritage
• HS1119 History in Practice Part 1: Questions, Frameworks and Audience
• HS1120 History in Practice Part 2: Sources, Evidence and Argument

Your seminar group meets fortnightly for each of these modules. In your classes you will discuss specific topics integral to the module's main themes. You will also have the opportunity to hone your general learning and history studying skills.

In your second and third undergraduate year

Welsh medium seminars are available for the core module 'Approaches to History' (HS1701). This course is mandatory for second year Single Honours degree students in History, and History with Welsh History, and is optional for undergraduate students studying a Joint Honours History Degree.

Depending on demand and staff availability, we also offer second and third year undergraduate optional modules completely through the medium of Welsh. Lectures and seminars may be held in Welsh for the following modules:

• HS1703 Entangled Histories: Wales and the Wider World 1714-1858 / HS1704 Hanes wedi ei Gyd-weu: Cymru a’r Byd 1714-1858
• HS1862 Llafur, Sosialaeth a Chymru 1880-1979 (100% in Welsh)
• HS1856 Wales, the English Reform Movement and the French Revolution of 1789 / HS1857 Cymru, Mudiad Diwygio’r Seneddd, a Chwyldro Ffrengig 1789

Independent studies

In years 2 and 3, you can also choose to study the independent studies modules HS1702 and HS1801 in Welsh.

HS1702 'Exploring Historical Debate' (Archwilio Dadl Hanesyddol) is assessed via a 6,000-word essay. You choose the subject and are allocated an adviser to guide you through the process of researching and writing your essay in four meetings over the year.

HS1801, your 'Final Year Dissertation' (Traethawd Estynedig), is an 8,000-10,000 word essay for which you research a topic related to one of your special option modules in-depth, utilising secondary and primary sources. You will be allocated a supervisor whom you will meet four times, and who will guide you through the process of researching and writing-up.
