The Wales China Schools Project was set up to promote Chinese language and culture across schools in Wales through the Confucius Classroom network.

The project is made up of the  three Welsh Confucius Institutes at Cardiff University, Bangor University and UWTSD. We currently work with over forty schools who have engaged with us in person, online or both.

We offer a range of Chinese programmes to primary and secondary schools including:

• GCSE and A-level courses
• Programmes leading to the YCT (Youth Chinese Test) in primary schools and HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) in secondary schools
• Classes leading to a WJEC language pathway qualification
• Language and culture courses

Our Chinese tutors can also work with schools to provide extra-curricular activities through after-school and lunchtime clubs, both in person and online.

Confucius classrooms

Schools with an interest and track record in offering Chinese may apply to become a Confucius Classroom.

As a Confucius Classroom, the school is eligible to receive annual funding from the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) to put towards the delivery of Chinese language and culture teaching. Each Confucius Classroom also receives a dedicated CLEC tutor to deliver Chinese within the school and other schools in its network.

There are currently 16 Confucius Classrooms across Wales, seven of which are managed by Cardiff Confucius Institute, five by the Confucius Institute at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), and four by Bangor University's Confucius Institute. Together, these Confucius Classrooms form the China Wales Schools Project and meet twice a year to attend training and to share best practice.

China weeks and taster days

China weeks and taster days allow pupils to grasp a basic appreciation of China and Chinese language and culture. Workshops can be tailored to best meet the needs of the pupils and schools, and might include activities such as:

• Tai Chi
• Chinese cooking
• Chinese handicrafts
• Calligraphy
• Mandarin language
• Chinese history
• Chinese dance and early morning exercises
• Chinese songs
• Traditional face and mask painting

Schools can opt to end the week with a presentation or assembly where the pupils can demonstrate what they have learnt to the rest of the school and parents. These can be organised in person or online.
