Our research ethos focuses on bringing basic science from the laboratory bench to the patient bedside.
Our research comprises three main areas which are sub-divided into specific interests spanning the expertise and interests of our membership.
We traditionally offers a range of bursaries and awards to support the research interests of our members. We will not be providing and bursaries and awards for the period 01/08/2020 - 31/07/2021.
We create networks with other Cardiff University institutes, centres and groups, such as the Arthritis Research (UK) Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre, the Materials Research Network, and the Cardiff Unit for Research and Evaluation in Medical and Dental Education.
Stem cell science
Stem cell science concerns the manipulation of stem cells for regenerative medicine for different applications, and the design of products combining manufactured materials with animal or human tissues or cells. It is a rapidly evolving field and, as such, gives rise to serious ethical questions of concern to society, as well as questions on the regulatory aspects of stem cell-based solutions.
This theme is sub-divided into three sections:
- manipulation of stem cell process for regenerative medicine
- ethical considerations and regulatory aspects
- stem cells and tissue engineering.
Tissue engineering and repair
Tissue engineering and repair concerns a number of interests focusing on specific ailments. These include:
- degenerative diseases of the brain - one of the greatest challenges of the new century for health care
- chronic kidney diseases, placing patients at greatly increased risk of morbidity and death
- vision loss affecting over 1 million people in the UK a cost of over £20 million per annum to health and social services
- the understanding and management of wound healing processes.
Our research in this them is therefore sub-divided into five sections:
- brain disease/repair
- kidney repair
- vision loss, bio-simulation and tissue repair
- tissue repair and wound healing
Disease translation
Disease translation concerns the management of degenerative diseases including:
- joint and bone diseases
- rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries, notably those resulting from overuse or repetitive strain injuries and injury due to acute trauma
- delivery of medicines, for example with the use of micro needle
- remote detection systems, for example to monitor blood sugar
- the control of microbial infections in tissues and wounds, with a particular interest in microbial biofilms.

- microbial control and prevention (including biofims)
- rehabilitation
- photobiology
