Research in our School spans design, the arts, crafts, humanities and architectural sciences and we foster excellence across our trans-disciplinary expertise. We were ranked 4th overall in the Research Excellence Framework 2021 among institutions undertaking research in ‘Architecture, Built Environment and Planning.’

Our research expertise is clustered into a series of ‘Research and Scholarship Groups’ which foster cultures of support, creativity and collaboration within the School:  Computational Methods in Architecture; Design Research and Professional Practice; Energy, Environment and People; History, Heritage and Conservation; Urbanism. Our funded research portfolio includes a rich array of collaborations across different schools of architecture as across disciplines and universities in the UK, Europe and worldwide.

We have productive research links with practice, industry, and government, frequently collaborating with non-academic partners on research. We also work closely with local communities, employing research skills to support the development of plans and visions for change. We view our contribution to the cultural life and development of Cardiff and Wales as a significant part of our mission.

Our internationally recognised academics support a thriving and vibrant postgraduate research community that reflects the full breadth of our expertise.
